Abstract:
The advent of 5G technology marks a significant leap in mobile network capabilities, offering unprecedented speeds, lower latency, and the ability to connect a vast number of devices simultaneously. While these advancements unlock new possibilities for industries ranging from healthcare to manufacturing, they also introduce a complex array of cybersecurity challenges. This paper delves into the unique vulnerabilities associated with 5G networks, emphasizing the ex-panded attack surface resulting from the integration of the Internet of Things (IoT), network slicing, and software-defined networking (SDN). Additionally, the reliance on millimeter waves and the global supply chain further exacerbate security risks. The study critically evaluates current cybersecurity measures, such as encryption, authentication, and AI-based threat detection, highlighting their efficacy in mitigating 5G-specific threats. Through an analysis of recent cybersecurity incidents in 5G deployments, this research underscores the importance of a multi-layered security approach and collaborative efforts among industry stakeholders. The findings offer actionable recommendations for enhancing the security posture of 5G networks, ensuring they can safely support the next generation of digital services and critical infrastructure.
